John Newling The Miracle Trees (Moringa Oleifera)

In March of 2010 John Newling was approached to develop a piece in collaboration with Bronislaw Szerszynski of the Department of Sociology and the ESRC Centre for the Economic and the Social Aspects of Genomics (CESAGen), Lancaster University. The work that emerged ‘Synthia II (code / soil / life)’ consisted of Craig Venter’s artificial life type ‘Synthia’. Growing within the soil was a Moringa Oleifera tree germinated by Newling in his studio.

During this time Newling germinated and tried to develop 11 of those ‘beneficiant’ bushes. Often known as the Miracle Tree, the Moringa Oleifera is native to the southern foothills of the Himalayas in northwestern India. Gram for gram, Moringa leaves include: seven occasions the vitamin C in oranges, 4 occasions the calcium in milk, 4 occasions the vitamin A in carrots, two occasions the protein in milk and 3 times the potassium in bananas. It is for this and different extraordinary properties of this tree that it has been known as the world’s most beneficiant tree.

As a part of his analysis Newling has been carefully observing the expansion of the bushes and making pressings of the Moringa leaves and full bushes. Leaves from the Moringa are pressed in chosen books and the work is complemented by a video documenting Newling’s recycling course of of constructing the soil from which the Moringa grows, caring for the crops, and urgent their leaves.

This is a uncommon alternative to review the rising bushes first-hand, with just one different identified instance inside the UK of a efficiently cultivated tree, on the Eden Project in Cornwall. This is the primary in a collection of artist’s interventions within the Study.

Tomorrow, after the hurricane passes, I shall take a picture of my growing Moringa tree and post it on my blog poetrynest. A poem dedicated to Moringa is also in the works.

  12. Hi john, I don't know if you remember we met at the Wellcome Trust the day I was there for a job interview and I was utterly intrigued by your project! It' s such a beautiful project in everyway! I just shared this vid with a friend on Facebook because she posted that she was going to make tea with her moringa flowers growing in her back garden! She lives in Trinidad! Did you know they have them there too?

  13. Moringa is good news.  It is grown here in Cambodia – It is cheap and of high quality.  I had a chronic dry cough later developing into a bronchial infection in a job that requires a lot of talking.  More or less as soon as I began taking the moringa powder, the cough and phlegm manufacture began to recede, and after a couple of weeks it was completely gone.  The problem had been there for a couple of months and a protocol of antibiotic intake,in the end, had no impact ( well a negative impact). More energy and stronger, too. Life is better!

Thanks to John for the intrigue and sensitivity.
